What Is Your Relationship With Money?

relationship with money, therapy with heart blog

What are the messages you received growing up about money? Do any of the following resonate with you?

  • It wasn’t discussed, but we always had plenty.
  • We never had enough money and there was fear and scarcity around finances in general (ie. Parents fighting about money, statements like “we can’t afford it”.)
  • You were told that you needed to make a ton of money because that will define you as a success.
  • You did not have a lot growing up so you determined that you would do it differently.
  • There is always enough!

Regardless of the messages given, they often follow you into your adult life and inform decisions about your professional and personal life. It’s important to have awareness about these beliefs because they may be getting in the way of you connecting with your partner or with your true Self. For example, if you define yourself by your income, you might be driven to make more and keep pushing. As a result, you miss experiencing the joy in life, the financial success, and spending time with the people who matter most to you.

I’m challenging my own beliefs about money. I’m recognizing how these messages drive me to keep repeating patterns of over scheduling and creating stress in my life. I’m beginning to imagine what it would be like to free myself from these limiting beliefs. Can you do the same?
